The song, which addresses a son's regret over unresolved conflict with his now-deceased father, moved veteran entertainer Rolf Harris to tears, live on UK breakfast television TV-am in December 1988. It won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically & Lyrically in 1989, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1990. In 1996, famed composer Burt Bacharach opined: "'The Living Years' is one of the finest lyrics of the last 10 years."

In 1987, Guns N' Roses started including the song in their live sets. A live version of the track was initially released on the maxi-single of Welcome to the Jungle the same year. They recorded a studio version in 1990 for the Days of Thunder Soundtrack , which was later slightly modified for the 1991 album Use Your Illusion II (basically discarding the responses in the second verse).
