It was released on December 6, 1999, by Jive Records, as the fourth single from the album. Before recording the song, Spears had to ask the writers of the song, Andreas Carlsson and Kristian Lundin, to re-write it, since it was a sexual song. The singer first recorded her vocals in March 1998, and re-recorded them later on the same year. The dance-pop and teen pop song alludes to a relationship that a woman desires to correct, not quite understanding what went wrong, as she comes to realize that she was " born to make [her lover] happy ". Upon release, the single became the duo's first and only No. 1 single in numerous territories, including the UK, where it topped the singles chart for eight consecutive weeks; the longest UK No. 1 reign for any girl band, and was the fourth biggest selling single of 1992. The single also held the No. 1 position for six weeks in band member Fahey's native Ireland. At the 1993 Brit Awards it won the award for Best British Video. In November 2010, The X Factor contestant Cher Lloyd performed the song on series 7 of the show. After Freddie Mercury's death, as Queen prepared to complete their posthumous album, Made in Heaven , this song was selected to be re-done by the band as a Queen song. The lead vocal Mercury recorded in 1987 was given a new backing track and new backing vocals. A significant difference between The Cross versions and the Queen version is that there's no spoken introduction, refrain or "end" as done by Taylor on the original.
